The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like standard physical horror, but inside Together resides a profound examination about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot commences when the couple transition from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He dreads the notion of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and fully committing to another person, the allegory avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
