EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
